How excess baggage fees work in Korea

Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs) in South Korea, such as Jeju Air, Jin Air, and T'way Air, typically calculate excess baggage fees on a linear, per-kilogram basis at the airport gate. For domestic routes, the rate is ₩2,000 per extra kg. For international short-haul routes (like Japan or China), LCCs charge around ₩10,000 per extra kg.

Full-Service Carriers (FSCs) like Korean Air and Asiana Airlines use a different tiered system. For example, on FSC international flights, if a bag exceeds the standard 23 kg allowance, they charge a flat fee of ₩100,000 (approx. USD 100) for the 24 kg–32 kg bracket, regardless of whether you are over by 1 kg or 9 kg.

To avoid paying steep fees at the counter, always weigh your bags beforehand and consider pre-purchasing additional allowance online up to 24–48 hours prior to departure, which typically saves 30% to 50% compared to airport rates.

Quick answers

Can my family share/pool our baggage allowance?

Yes. Most Korean airlines (including LCCs) allow family members or companions booked under the same reservation code to combine their free baggage allowance. For example, if two passengers have a 15 kg limit each, they can check in one 10 kg bag and one 20 kg bag together without fee.

What is the maximum weight limit for one bag?

For health and safety regulations, no single piece of checked baggage can exceed 32 kg (70 lbs), even if you are willing to pay the excess fee. Any bag heavier than 32 kg must be repacked into separate bags.

Does this calculator apply to oversized baggage?

No. Oversized baggage (where the total linear dimensions sum of width + height + length exceed 158 cm or 203 cm depending on the carrier) is subject to separate flat-rate handling fees, ranging from ₩10,000 for domestic to over ₩200,000 for international routes.
