How Korean Hotel Service Charge and VAT Work

In South Korea, most hotels add a 10% service charge to the published room rate, then apply a 10% value-added tax (VAT) on the combined amount. This is often written as “++” pricing. This calculator makes the math transparent, so you can tell how much of your bill is tax and surcharge.

If you’re presented with a final total and want to know the original base price (for comparison or expense tracking), switch the toggle to “Total price.” The tool will back-calculate the base rate and show you exactly how much you’re paying in service charge and VAT.

Keep in mind that some smaller guesthouses or Airbnb-style accommodations might not add service charges, and tax rates can differ for long stays or other services, but for standard hotels, this is the rule.

Quick answers

Does the service charge always apply?

Yes, most hotels add a 10% service charge automatically. Some luxury hotels or resorts might even have higher service charges (up to 15%), but this tool uses the standard 10%.

Is the service charge taxable?

Yes, the service charge is subject to VAT. So VAT is calculated on the room rate plus service charge.

What if I stay at a hotel that has a different service charge?

This calculator assumes the standard 10% service charge and 10% VAT. If your hotel charges a different rate, the calculation won’t be accurate.
